Baylor School Campus Visit Guidelines
The College Counseling Office invites college admission officers to visit our campus during the fall of each school year. Our students are very interested in meeting with representatives in the fall season; we don’t encourage spring visitors as a rule, but we do co-sponsor the Coast to Coast College Fair in late April, which is open to all students and families in the greater Chattanooga area. More information can be found at: http://www.coasttocoastcollegefair.com/.
Appointments to visit the Baylor campus are scheduled by Kathy Snow, administrative assistant in the College Counseling office. Kathy can be reached at 423-267-8506, x.357, from mid-August through mid-June of the school year.
We seem to have many college visitors in the fall, especially from Tuesday-Thursday, and have successfully used the mid-day lunch periods as the best time to schedule our visitors. In order to meet the maximum number of students available at this time we recommend saving 1.5 hours. This allows students in all grades, 9-12, the chance to ask those burning college admission questions and to learn more about your school. If you cannot stay for the entire period, please inform Kathy of the time you can be on campus so she can highlight that in the details of your visit.
We will, however, schedule a visit at another time of the school day if your schedule does not allow for a mid-day visit, but please be aware that our students and faculty are serious about protecting the integrity of the class session—few students want to miss a class and fewer faculty regard a college visit as a good reason to miss the day’s work.
Baylor is located on the North Shore of Chattanooga, approximately a 10 minute easy drive from GPS (Girls Preparatory School) and McCallie. Parking is at a premium on our campus. Our Welcome Station will provide you with a Visitor’s Parking Pass which will entitle you to park anywhere there is a free space, but allow 7-15 minutes for that hunt and the trek to our office. We recommend that you familiarize yourself with a campus map available under the Admissions section of our website, www.baylorschool.org for more specific details. Prime parking for a visit to the College Counseling Office would be in the small parking lot directly behind the Weeks Science Center or across the lane in a large lot adjacent to Duke Arena. On exceptionally busy days we will reserve parking on Rike Field, the large oval grass covered space you see upon first entering campus; our guard will direct you to this location when necessary. It is a quick walk past the science center to the stairs that ascend a hill and pass the walkway to our office (signs posted on the stairs).
Please begin your visit to Baylor School in the College Counseling Office, located on the first floor of the Chapel Building. If you are visiting on a day when we have many visitors you will most likely find yourself behind a 6’ folding table in the lobby area of our main chapel, two floors above the counseling office. This will be closely located near the dining hall and the largest amount of foot traffic.
After the conclusion of your visit, we ask that you please return to the College Counseling Office to leave any of your college’s materials, to exchange business cards, and obtain our latest school profile, if you did not receive it upon arrival. Our college counselors try very hard to greet each guest and spend a few minutes talking with you. Sometimes special programs, writing days, or meetings keep us away. We hope you will accept our apology in advance if one of us misses your visit.
Daytime temperatures during September are generally between 85-95 degrees with significant humidity and the possibility of locally heavy rain during thunderstorms. In October, things mellow out a bit, the humidity drops and the temperatures range from high 70’s to low 80’s.
Baylor School is located in the Eastern Time Zone so don’t be confused if you are arriving from Birmingham, Nashville, or St. Andrew’s Sewanee School, all of which are in the Central Time Zone. You’ll need to allow for the hour missed in changing zones.
Driving Directions to Campus:
From GPS: [5 miles distance] Turn left out of the GPS campus. Stay in the right lane heading off the exit before the Bridge. This will be Frasier Ave which will turn into Cherokee Blvd. Continue straight through on Cherokee, go thorough the tunnel in the suburb of Red Bank (immediately on your right is Nikki’s restaurant). Take a left onto Signal Mountain Blvd. at the traffic light, with a Waffle House on your left. The Baylor School entrance will be on your left just past Pineville Road. You will clearly see the new gates which meet the road at a 90 degree angle.
From McCallie: [10 miles] Bailey Avenue runs directly in and out of the McCallie School entrance. Bailey Ave becomes Martin Luther King Boulevard as you move closer to downtown. Stay on MLK as you approach US 27, take the right entrance which heads North across the Tennessee River. Shortly after crossing the river, there will be several exits—you will want to exit at Route 127, Signal Mountain. As you merge off the exit, move to the left lanes, and look for the new Baylor gates (also on your left) and the light that directs you into our campus at a 90 degree angle to the road.
