Special Programs
Baylor's core curriculum provides an excellent foundation for students in arts, sciences, mathematics, and humanities. But one of the strengths of our curriculum is that these major academic disciplines are further enriched with a number of special programs that provide students with even more challenges and opportunities. In the sixth grade, some of these programs include:
Literacy Strategies
Literacy Strategies is a course designed to provide each
child with the skills necessary to become an effective student,
particularly in respect to reading. The majority of class
time focuses on improving reading comprehension through
teaching children how to identify main ideas, find supporting
evidence, and make inferences and generalizations. Some
class time is also spent covering basic study skills and
basic library and research skills.
Wesley Woods
An important component to the sixth grade program is our
annual class trip to Wesley Woods outdoor education center.
The three day/two night October outing is late enough in the
year to ensure the class has become acclimated to the Baylor
community but early enough in the year to serve as a valuable
venue for children to build relationships with their peers and
teachers in a non-academic setting. While at the center, students
and their teachers take part in a wide variety of activities
focusing on building positive group dynamics and environmental
education.
Field Trips
The sixth grade takes part in a variety of field trips over
the course of the school year. The class as a whole takes
part in two trips: in the fall to Wesley Woods and in the
spring to either Atlanta or Nashville. Each advisory group
also takes numerous trips off campus which usually focus on
educational activities, community service or just having fun.
Reading & Book Clubs
Reading is an important component of the sixth grade program
at Baylor. Students are expected to keep an accurate log
as they read books towards the required 1,000 page per quarter
reading goal, and our schedule has several
independent reading times built in to allow students
opportunities to read. In addition, the sixth grade community (
students, parents and teachers) take part in two Book Clubs
over the course of the year. Book Clubs are wonderful opportunities
for everyone to come together for a few hours and discuss a
common book and celebrate literature together.
